Inspired by The Olympic Truce
At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games , the Foundation awarded the Prime Minister of Greece Kostas Karamanlis and the former Foreign Minister of Greece George Papandreou at a ceremony aboard the Queen Mary 2. Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney also received an award for outstanding service to the Olympic Movement as head of the 2002 Salt Lake Games.
At the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games , the Foundation honored the people of Italy and the award was received by the Foreign Minister of Italy Gianfranco Fini in the historic Palace of Stupinigi. The Foundation also bestowed awards for leadership in the spirit of the Olympic Truce to the President of Nigeria H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo and to the President of Liberia H.E. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf , both of whom accepted the awards through their Ministers. Governor Mitt Romney helped present an award for outstanding service to Mr. Peter Ueberroth for his time as head of the 1984 Los Angeles Games and his current work as head of the United States Olympic Committee. Honorary President of the International Olympic Committee Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch spoke at the event, as did the Greek Minister of Tourism Mrs. Fanny Palli-Petralia .
At the CARIFTA 2007 Games, “ The Caribbean Olympics ”, the Foundation honored the people of the host Turks & Caicos Islands and the award was received by the Minister of Youth and Sport Dr. Lillian Boyce during the Opening Ceremonies. The entire stadium affirmed the Foundation’s “My Truce Oath” in conjunction with the Athletes’ Oath.
At the Small States of Europe Games 2007 , the Foundation awarded His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco in a private ceremony in the Prince’s Palace in Monte Carlo calling to mind his family’s service to the Olympic Movement.
At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games , the Foundation honored Mr. Cai Mingzhao, China’s Vice Minister of State Council Information Office and President of the China International Publishing Group, and Dr. Richard C. Levin, President of Yale University for the joint massive scholarly publishing project The Culture & Civilization of China at the US Olympic House hosted by US Olympic Committee head Peter Ueberroth. The Foundation also bestowed a unique award to Honorary President of the International Olympic Committee Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch . Also, American philanthropist and Olympic Order recipient Mr. Irwin Belk accepted Truce Ideal Award for his lifelong commitment to Olympic values.
At the London 2012 Olympic Games , the Foundation held its event in the historic East India Club on St. James Square where International Olympic Committee founder Pierre de Coubertain headquartered his London-based efforts to revive the game in the 1890s. Under the theme of “The Long and Winding Road”, the Foundation awarded the Honorable Michael Bates, Member of the House of Lords , for his historic walk from Olympia to London to call attention to the Olympic Truce. Senior leadership of the Olympic Movement and a wide array of participants from civil society also witnessed the presentation to Mr. Mario Pescante, Chairman of the International Relations Commission of the International Olympic Committee and longtime Olympic senior statesman.
The Truce Foundation landmarks the Olympic Truce’s message through gifts of monuments and statuary. Major pieces are permanently installed at International Olympic Committee headquarters in Switzerland and at United States Olympic Committee headquarters in Colorado. Both are eight-foot bronze statues.
